Things to do in Waupun
"End of the Trail" in Shaler Park
Clarence Shaler, a Waupun industrialist, commissioned sculptor James Earle Fraser to cast "End of the Trail" in bronze after seeing the plaster version at the 1914 exposition, and gave it to the city. It anchors what Travel Wisconsin calls the state's "City of Sculpture": 13 pieces on a self-guided tour that also includes The Citadel in front of the Waupun Heritage Museum at 22 S. Madison Street, Dawn of Day at City Hall, and Recording Angel in Forest Mound Cemetery. Commentary for each piece plays through the free Otocast app.
Marsh Haven Nature Center
A volunteer-run non-profit nature centre founded in 1984 at the north end of Horicon Marsh, on Highway 49. The trails are open daily from 10 a.m. to sunset. The education building opens weekends only in February and March and again in November and December; from early April it is open Thursdays and Fridays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Horicon Marsh
About 33,000 acres of wetland carrying two designations at once: a state wildlife area under the Wisconsin DNR and a national wildlife refuge under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is also listed as a Wetland of International Importance. Migration brings hundreds of thousands of ducks through, along with tens of thousands of Canada geese and sandhill cranes. Bald eagles, great blue herons and the state-endangered black tern nest or feed here.
Waupun County Park and the Maple Forest
A 103-acre Fond du Lac County park. It holds a wooded 38-unit family campground and a group site area, two open-air picnic shelters and one enclosed shelter, a disc golf course, and volleyball, basketball and pickleball courts. The City of Waupun runs a swimming facility on adjacent property. The northeastern 40 acres are State Natural Area #51, Waupun Park Maple Forest — red and white oak, maple and white ash — crossed by hiking and skiing trails.
Wild Goose State Trail
A 34-mile crushed-stone trail running from State Highway 60 near Clyman Junction north to Fond du Lac, passing Minnesota Junction, Juneau and Oakfield. A parking lot on the north side of State Highway 49 sits next to the trail, and there is more parking at the National Wildlife Refuge lot about a quarter-mile east of the trail off the same highway. The trail is open year round and no state trail pass is required.
Waupun Heritage Museum
The city's Carnegie library, built in 1904-05 to a Gothic Revival design by architect H. A. Foeller and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It stopped serving as the public library in 1968 when a new library opened, and has been leased to the Waupun Historical Society since 1971. The society runs it as the local history museum.

Waupun has no long-record NOAA station of its own, so the nearest 1991-2020 normals come from Beaver Dam WWTP, southwest of town. There January averages a high of 24.7 F and a low of 8.8 F, with measurable snow on about five days in the month. Snowfall normals run 13.0 inches in January, 10.6 in February and 8.8 in December, adding to roughly 43 inches across the year. source
The city line crosses the Dodge-Fond du Lac county boundary and residents are split between the two: at the 2020 census 7,795 of the 11,344 residents were on the Dodge County side and 3,549 on the Fond du Lac side. Which side an address sits on decides the county portion of the property tax bill, and which county sheriff, register of deeds and human services office you deal with. Check which county your address is in. source
