Apartments in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin

A National Historic Landmark built in 1871 for the Dousman family and restored to its appearance in the 1890s. The 17-acre site also holds the Astor Fur Warehouse, now a museum of the fur trade. Tours run Wednesday through Sunday until 29 October.

A 240-acre city park on the riverfront with five reservable picnic shelters, tables, running water and port-a-potties, a baseball field, two softball fields, and an 18-hole disc golf course between Blackhawk Ave and Washington St. The Mississippi River Sculpture Park sits inside it, with life-size bronzes of figures from the area's history including Black Hawk, Dr. Beaumont and Emma Big Bear. The Prairie Villa Rendezvous, Prairie Dog Blues Fest, the Villa Louis Carriage Classic, the Mud Run and Oktoberfest are all held here.

The Prairie du Chien Historical Society's museum of frontier medicine and local history. Exhibits cover army surgeon William Beaumont's experiments on human digestion and Civil War-era hospital care; Wisconsin military history, including the Black Hawk War and figures such as Zachary Taylor and Jefferson Davis; and the town's fur-trade beginnings, schools, businesses and railroads. Open Wednesday through Monday, 10 am to 4 pm, through 30 October.

A 2,628-acre park on the bluffs where the Wisconsin River joins the Mississippi, with campsites 500 feet above the confluence. There are 22 miles of hiking and nature trails, 109 family campsites, cross-country ski trails, Native American burial mounds, a canoe trail, and a concession renting canoes and kayaks. Admission is charged.

A National Park Service site preserving more than 200 American Indian mounds above the Upper Mississippi, including animal-shaped effigy mounds. A line of conical mounds leads out to Fire Point, which overlooks the river, and other trails reach the Marching Bear Mound Group. There is a visitor center, ranger programs and a Junior Ranger program. The mounds are considered sacred by the monument's 20 culturally associated American Indian tribes.

A hamburger stand started in 1909 by Pete Gokey, who began with a food cart he took to local events. The burgers are poached in shallow water with thinly sliced onions rather than grilled, and cheese is not offered as a topping. Open Friday through Sunday, April through October.
